I used to think that life was easy
and all you had to do was smile
I was the lord of the world I surveyed,
the king of a small town mile
I was a big fish in a small pond
till I made that leap and reality dawned
It's more complex than I'd ever thought
in the world out there in the big blue beyond

And I do know better now, gimme time to work it out,
and I do know better now, what it's all about.

I used to think that all I had to do
was write my songs and sing to you
Everything would fall into place
with a little hard work and a smiling face
Now in the case of my chosen field
its a pretty much down to luck
Nothing to do with the skill that you have
it's down to who you know and who you fuck

So take your chances, make the most of your time,
doin' what you want to achieve with your life
and just in case St Peter's not a lie
better look your maker in his or her eye
